Orbex Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Today we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

This day holds immense significance in promoting gender equality and empowerment in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It aims to promote gender equality and encourage more women and girls to pursue careers in STEM by raising awareness of the barriers they face and advocating for their full participation in these fields. This day also serves as a platform to recognise the invaluable contributions of women and girls to scientific advancement and innovation worldwide.

To mark the occasion, we asked some of the women in our team about their experience in the industry and any advice they would give to young women and girls wanting to pursue a STEM career.

Manon Bordeau, Graduate Structures Engineer, said:

“Ever since I was at university and joined a rocketry club, I've had a passion for space exploration and building rockets. Even though there weren't many women – usually less than 10% – I didn't let that hold me back from exploring more opportunities.

My own experience of working in aerospace engineering is an exciting and fulfilling career path. Building rockets and sending them into space requires a diverse range of skills, from designing, engineering to problem-solving and every day presents new fascinating challenges and problems to solve.

Being a woman in STEM can be empowering. As I moved from a rocketry club to working in an aerospace company, I learned that being a woman never stopped me from succeeding. By breaking gender stereotypes and proving our capabilities, we pave the way for future generations of women to pursue their passions without limitations. Diversity brings fresh perspectives and ideas to the table, leading to more innovative solutions.

Choosing a career in engineering, particularly in the space industry, can be incredibly rewarding. So, to all the young women out there, I encourage you to pursue your interests in STEM and embark on a journey of exploration and discovery.”

Abby Bryan, Composite Technician, added:

“Through my work with composites in space and prosthetics, I've seen how STEM transforms lives and pushes boundaries.

These experiences underpin the vital role of diversity in expanding ideas, perspectives, and solutions in manufacturing. I believe that encouraging more girls and women into STEM roles is essential in shaping a more inclusive and innovative future.”

Elena Granado, Propulsion Modelling Engineer, said:

"From an early age, I was drawn to science and innovation which encouraged me to pursue higher degree studies in research and start a career in the STEM industry.

Despite working in a male dominated field, being a woman has not discouraged me to follow this path. I have always been eager to learn and have never shied away from a challenge.

If you love something enough, no matter who you are, through perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination, everyone can achieve their dreams."
