Opportunities for students

Orbex supports the development of new and upcoming talent in a number of ways:

Working with UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS)

In 2021 Orbex was proud to sponsor the UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS) National Rocketry Competition. The annual Rocketry Championship challenges teams to design, build and launch a mid-power rocket with the primary goal of reaching the greatest apogee possible and the winning teams came from University of Sheffield and University of Birmingham Space Society.

Orbex has also made funding available to UKSEDS to provide teams that take part in their competitions and that consist of at least 50% women or non-binary members with additional funding. The goal of this grant is to encourage wider participation in the core technology aspects of launch vehicle design and development. Those taking part in competitions should contact UKSEDS direct for more information about the diversity grant.

Internship Programme

The Orbex Internship Programme provides students at different points in their higher education journey the unique opportunity to work across a range of disciplines. The paid placements are expected to last 10 months with the potential opportunity to join Orbex in a permanent role in the future.

Interns have the chance to gain experience in various disciplines including: Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC), Structures and Systems Engineering. The programme is available to candidates studying at an undergraduate or postgraduate level, with specific experience in mathematics, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, physics or aerospace. Register your interest to be kept up-to-date on when the next intake opens for applications.

Support from a UK-based company in the space industry is invaluable for our members, demonstrating that not only is a space career in the UK viable, but it is available and accessible to all.

What I have learnt about myself during my time at Orbex is the most valuable experience I could have gained and will carry with me throughout my career.

The Orbex diversity funding gave our small team the opportunity to secure much needed funding. We really appreciate how it has been able to help us grow and include more people into our society activities.
